An interesting looking movie to be sure is Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, which is directed by Luc Besson. Besson also directed another space opera film, The Fifth Element, which starred Milla Jovovich  and Bruce Willis, of all people, way back in 1997 when WIllis has hair and ambition. Valerian isn’t an original project though, but based on a series of graphics novels or comics entitled Valérian and Laureline, from France. The synopsis follows:

In the 28th century, special operatives Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline work together to maintain order throughout the human territories. Under assignment from the minister of defense, the duo embarks on a mission to Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis where diverse species gather to share knowledge and culture. When a dark force threatens the peaceful city, Valerian and Laureline must race against time to identify the menace that also jeopardizes the future of the universe.

In anticipation of the film’s release, STX has officially released this new featurette for those of you still interested in seeing a movie with the cast it has, including Rihanna. Hey, it could work:

My take: I’m not interested in seeing the film, really, but the behind the scenes making-of is pretty interesting and detailed. I’ll probably never see the film itself, and though Valerian and The Fifth Element supposedly share a similar universe, I’ll never probably enjoy the latter film as much as I should, either.
