Naturally enough, there’s interest for a Batgirl film from out of the DCEU, which doesn’t surprise me much. What does surprise me is that Priyanka Chopra has set her sights on the role with an intention of giving audiences another feminist hero.
“But my dream part is, now that I’m working in America, I definitely want to do a superhero part. When I think of American movies, they’ve had superheroes for eons right? So I definitely want to play a superhero and I want to have an interesting super power. I don’t know… Batgirl would be so cool!”
Images of Halle Berry’s Catwoman come to mind, because although Chopra has dished up roles in television in ABC’s Quantico and recently starred in the bomb Baywatch, she seems to lack the onscreen presence of even Gal Gadot, who had to prove herself in films like Fast and the Furious 6 before leading a film herself, which is of course a huge issue for someone who has never done so before. Should Chopra play a white role, as well? I don’t know, but I think casting should go primarily to a woman who can fill seats. Chopra cannot, as of yet, do so, and the fact Baywatch bombed with even the presence of mega-star Dwayne Johnson, one wonders how Chopra could possible could lead a film as large as a Joss Wedon production. I just don’t see it.
